March 14th, 2008 | Sock yarns–all wound up

Anticipating a yen to knit actual socks I have spent some time winding skeins into about-equal cakes of yarn. They’ll be a placeholder for this week–something to look at while blogging is intermittent, as we are in Banff for spring vacation. STR Fire on the Mountain. STR Lunasea. Mystery yarn.

March 13th, 2008 | This week’s books

I am currently attempting to winnow out my reading choices for traveling this week. It will be 10 days travel, and I know I will read at least 4 books. I have 10 selected, but I will be in Canada, and I think the chance that I’ll visit a book store, and buy books, is high. [...]

March 7th, 2008 | Deep stash finds

Happily for my future sock knitting, I had some other great finds in the bins. Above, there are two Socks That Rock mid-weight skeins (The top is Sunstone, not sure about the middle.). The bottom one is Fleece Artist. This one may be STR as well, but it could also be Great Adirondack Yarn Co.  Two more STR [...]

March 7th, 2008 | There might be enough . . .

(See yesterday’s post–enough for the blanket, is what I mean.) I found all this in the stash. Not all of it is sock yarn, but most of it is close enough. And most of it is blue or at least purple. I can breathe out now. I will be mostly winding this weekend!

This blanket is going quickly, square by square, depsite some little bumps in the road–um–seams. I frogged to the bump and reworked:   It is lots of fun to choose which color goes next to which others, and see the resulting mix. I have only frogged two squares based on color ‘mismatches’ so far.   [...]

March 3rd, 2008 | Author chat event

Friday night I was lucky enough to get a ticket to this event.    One of my favorite authors of all time was speaking, and I had never had the chance to hear her live before. That would be Anne Lamott. When I was pregnant for the first time, my husband’s friend gave me her book [...]

February 29th, 2008 | Reading while knitting

While generating squares, I have also been reading a great set of books.   The first was recommended via LibraryThing, and was the book for the Toronto Public Libraries BookBuzz chat this month. Consolation is the story of a young man arriving in Toronto just as it was beginning to become a city, and a [...]

February 28th, 2008 | My mitered-square sock-yarn afghan

I have found the ideal project for my current state of mind (and life). I am generating squares at a brisk pace (I can make one each way on the train and more than one during a movie or hockey game). I have made 19 so far, and I’m one my way to making a whole [...]

Mitered squares. It’s a square: you’ve seen one, you’ve seen ‘em all. But maybe in another color? Or two more? And they provide a somewhat productive way to use up all that yummy sock yarn I will likely never make into socks?  Um, yeah. Now I’m beginning to catch on. Project details coming soon.

February 19th, 2008 | Spinning a little

I spent a bit of Sunday watching Elizabeth, and turning the carded fleece into this not-too-finely-spun wool: The movie was great, the spinning was fun, and I felt productive. I have about that much more brown fleece to card and spin onto another bobbin, and I’m guessing about 2 bobbins-worth of white to card and [...]
